Yes. Friday, 2 October 2026 is Gandhi Jayanti, and it's observed as a dry day across India, Maharashtra included. No liquor sales at shops, and bars don't serve.
If you're in Mumbai and planning an evening, plan it around that. Or don't plan around it at all. It's only a Friday.
What exactly is a dry day?
A day when selling alcohol isn't allowed. Shops shut their liquor counters, and bars and restaurants stop serving it.
It's not about drinking at home. It's about selling.
Is there a national list of dry days?
Not really. Liquor is a state subject in India, so each state writes its own rules. In practice, three days are dry almost everywhere:
- 26 January, Republic Day
- 15 August, Independence Day
- 2 October, Gandhi Jayanti
After that it varies by state, and by city. Elections are dry too: the 48 hours before polls close, and usually counting day.
What about other dry days in Mumbai?
Maharashtra has eight fixed statewide dry days: 26 January, 30 January, 1 May, Ashadhi Ekadashi, 15 August, Anant Chaturdashi, 2 October and Kartiki Ekadashi. On top of those, the district collector can add more, sometimes only a day or two ahead. Where all of this comes from is its own story.
So before you plan a night around a festival, check your local excise notice, or just ask the bar. They'll know by then.
Is Sober October the same thing?
No. Sober October is a month-long charity challenge. Macmillan Cancer Support brought it to the UK in 2013 as "Go Sober for October". People sign up, don't drink for the month, and raise money.
A dry day is a law. Sober October is a choice. They just happen to share a month.
So what do you actually do on 2 October?
Whatever you were going to do. Friends over. A long walk. Sea face at seven. Dinner that goes on too long because nobody's watching the time.

A dry day isn't a big deal. It's a Friday with one option fewer on the menu. Some nights that's the menu you'd have picked anyway.
